Battery maintenance tips for your electric bicycle

The most vulnerable component of an electric bicycle is the battery. From the very first moment you can ensure optimal use of the battery of your electric bicycle.

It is essential to know that a new battery only reaches its maximum capacity after a number of charging cycles. To ensure that your battery reaches its full potential, it is important to fully charge the battery during the first three charges.

Store your battery in a suitable location, especially because batteries are sensitive to low temperatures. At lower temperatures, both the range and the charging capacity of the battery decrease. In winter it is advisable to store the battery indoors if there is no heated storage available for your electric bicycle.

Most important battery advice: never leave your battery completely discharged! It is crucial to take regular short rides in the winter to keep the battery healthy, so that you can continue cycling without any problems in the summer. The process of charging and discharging keeps the battery active and in good condition, extending its lifespan.

Here are some tips to make longer use of your electric bicycle's battery:

  • Only charge the battery when necessary, for example a few hours before a long ride.
  • If possible, never let the battery completely discharge, but charge it in a timely manner (from approximately 20 percent capacity).
  • Use the original charger and store it in a dry place at room temperature.
  • If the battery is not working properly, always have it checked by a bicycle mechanic.
  • Store the battery at room temperature especially in cold temperatures.
  • Do not leave the battery in direct sunlight in the summer.
  • Even if you do not use the bicycle, it is advisable to charge the battery every month.
  • For many short journeys, do not charge the battery after each journey, but wait until it is still approximately 20 percent full.
  • Do not charge the battery in an environment where it is freezing; a temperature between 20-25 degrees Celsius is optimal.
  • If the battery or charger is damaged, have an expert check whether it is still safe to use.
